Week 1 Summary and Reflection

What a week it has been! We have started at the very beginning - God creating the heavens and the earth - and ended with the boy Jesus astonishing the teachers in the temple. If you have fallen behind, the weekend is your chance to catch up. And if you are on track, take a moment to thank God for the privilege of spending time in His Word this week.

Old Testament: Genesis 1-9

This week's Genesis readings took us on a journey from the beauty of creation through to the brokenness of the fall, the tragedy of Cain and Abel, and the drama of Noah and the flood. The big idea running through it all is this: God created everything good, humanity keeps choosing sin, and yet God, in His extraordinary grace, keeps making a way forward. He made a covenant with Noah after the flood - and that same covenant-keeping God is the one we are in relationship with today.

Reflection question: Where in your own life do you see the tension between God's goodness and your own tendency to drift from Him?

Poetry: Psalms 1-5

Five psalms in, and already we have been given a rich toolkit for the life of faith. From the call to meditate on God's Word day and night (Psalm 1), to the Messianic vision of Psalm 2, to David crying out in the dark (Psalms 3 and 4), to a morning prayer for God's guidance and protection (Psalm 5) - these poems show us that faith is honest, varied, and deeply personal. The Psalms give us permission to bring all of life to God, in all its complexity.

Reflection question: Which of this week's psalms spoke most directly to where you are right now - and why?

New Testament: Luke 1:1-2:52

Luke opens his gospel with extraordinary joy and worship. We have met Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the shepherds, Simeon, and Anna - all ordinary people caught up in the most extraordinary event in human history. The big thread running through these two chapters is that God keeps His word. Every promise He made through the prophets is coming true in this baby, born in a stable, worshipped by shepherds, and recognised by faithful, waiting hearts. No word from God will ever fail.

Reflection question: Who in this week's Luke readings do you most identify with - and what does their response to Jesus challenge you to do?

A Prayer for the Weekend

๐Ÿ™ Lord, thank You for this first week in Your Word. You created this world good, You keep Your promises faithfully, and You meet us in every season of life - the dark ones and the joyful ones alike. May we be people who meditate on Your Word, who walk blamelessly before You, and who, like Mary, simply say: "May Your word to me be fulfilled." Amen.
