Lent With the Wesleys

  • Lent is a wonderful ‘time gift’ aimed to help us reflect on our lives and to intentionally deepen our following of Jesus Christ. In this thoughtfully crafted devotional, Luke Powell helps us to do this in a practical, down-to-earth, and helpful way. By joining the timeless wisdom of the Wesley brothers with his own Scriptural insights, we receive daily guidance for a meaningful Lenten journey. I warmly commend Luke’s booklet with the added assurance that he himself seeks to live faithfully in the house of his own words.

  • In today’s demands for fast foods and beverages; with the use of lightning-fast internet access to information; as well as the ever-growing reliability on AI assistants to make research and suggested responses immediately possible; this booklet has a loud and timeous call of truth to it. It echoes with the call of the Lord through Jeremiah, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls…” (Jer. 6:16).  I found it soul enriching. The discipline of the 40 days alone renewed my spirit and gave a deeper meaning to my life. I dare you to take on the Lenten challenge to, “Pause, Engage and Change.”

  • By a Wesleyan, for Wesleyans, about the Wesleys.

Luke’s Methodist background and his passion for the teachings and sermons of the Wesleys, place him in a privileged position to share this devotional resource with the world.

A powerful reminder of our Christian heritage.

  • Luke Powell makes John and Charles Wesley's theological brilliance accessible for all of us who desire to go deeper with God!

Lent with the Wesleys is a well-written invitation to join the 40-day journey to the Cross through the means of grace. You will be invited from prevenient grace to entire sanctification and growth in grace.

We will do well this Lenten Season to hit our knees in prayer with our Bible in one hand and Lent with the Wesleys in the other.

  • St Paul says that when the “eyes of our heart” are opened, one of the blessings we receive is “the glorious riches of His inheritance in the saints” (Ephesians 1:18). There are few greater blessings that come to us from the saints than those we have received through the ministry and teaching of the brothers, John and Charles Wesley. Over two hundred and fifty years have passed since the great Evangelical Revival that shook England, and few people today know much of the glorious riches they brought to the world, and how profoundly they changed the lives of ordinary people.

In these Lenten studies, Luke Powell makes these simple yet profound truths and insights available to us in a form that is accessible and easy to understand. I pray that they will be a great blessing to you as you journey with them through this season of Lent.

Coming 2026!

Join me on a 40-day Lenten journey, preparing the heart for Easter using words of inspiration from John Wesley’s writings and Charles Wesley’s hymns.

Journey With the Good Shepherd

Psalm 23 is known and loved by religious and non-religious people alike. I once played the piano at a funeral in a local church here in South Africa, and we sang the hymn which contains these words. The minister told me afterwards that the widow had picked Psalm 23 as the reading and hymn because it was the only Bible passage she knew.

I wonder if you have also found this Psalm to be meaningful in your life? It has been recited by many famous actors. It has been sung by many famous singers. But that’s not why it endures - it endures because ordinary people living ordinary lives find something in these words that resonates.

I invite you to journey with me through this Psalm, verse by verse, for the next 3 weeks. There are only 6 verses in the Psalm, and so we spend a few days on each one, reflecting deeply on its meaning in our lives today.

May you be richly blessed, as countless others have been, by the words that David wrote.

Because Jesus

I believe that of all the people we could observe and try to emulate or copy, Jesus is as good as it gets. And in fact, emulating Jesus is truly the ultimate goal of our Christian lives. Some people think the ultimate goal of becoming a Christian is getting to heaven. But there’s so much more to it than that! God’s desire for us is transformation – transformation into the likeness of Jesus.

This devotional booklet is called Because Jesus. Just like the young child says because Jimmy did XYZ, I also did XYZ; we’re going to spend three weeks looking at how because Jesus did XYZ, we will also do XYZ.

I hope and pray that this will be a special season for you, as you observe Jesus closely and seek to live the same way He did.
