Week 9 Reflection and Summary
What a week it has been! We watched Egypt reel under the final plagues before Israel walked free through the first Passover, sat with David and the sons of Korah through guilt, mortality, and downcast longing, and followed Jesus from His final public teaching all the way to His arrest and trial. If you've fallen behind, the weekend is your chance to catch up. And if you're on track, take a moment to thank God for the privilege of spending time in His Word this week.
Old Testament: Exodus 8-13
This week we watched God's relentless, escalating contest with Pharaoh and the gods of Egypt reach its climax in the first Passover, as the blood of a lamb spared Israel from judgement and set them free. The big idea running through it all is that God rescues His people through the blood of a lamb - a rescue Israel was told to remember for every generation to come, and one that points us straight to Jesus, our own Passover Lamb.
Reflection question: Where do you still need to trust God for deliverance in your own life, the way Israel had to trust Him on that first Passover night?
Poetry: Psalms 38-42
Five deeply honest psalms took us through guilt, the fleeting shortness of life, confident worship in a hard place, betrayal by a close friend, and a downcast soul longing for God. The big idea is that God welcomes our full, honest selves in prayer - whatever we're carrying, these psalms show us how to bring it to Him rather than hide it from Him.
Reflection question: Which of this week's five psalms best describes where your own heart is right now?
New Testament: Luke 20:19-22:71
As opposition to Jesus intensified this week, He remained fully in control throughout - outwitting His accusers, teaching us to watch and pray, instituting the Lord's Supper, and openly declaring who He was even as betrayal and arrest closed in around Him. The big idea is that Jesus walked towards the cross knowingly and willingly, never losing His grip on who He was or what He'd come to do.
Reflection question: Like Peter, where might you need to depend more on Jesus' strength than your own confidence this week?
A Prayer for the Weekend
🙏 Lord, thank You for this week in Your Word. You delivered Israel from slavery, just as You now deliver us from sin. You meet us in every honest cry of our hearts, and You remained steady and unshaken even as betrayal and suffering closed in around You. Help us to trust You more deeply, and to watch and pray as You've called us to. Amen.
