A Special Place
Is there a place in your life that holds a lot of different memories? Maybe a house or a venue or a street or a churchβsomething like that?
For me, it's our family home, my parents' home. I remember playing games there as a child, playing lots of cricket, learning the piano there. I remember family occasionsβ21sts, 30ths, 50ths, 80ths. I remember family visits. Shereen and I had our wedding reception there, and I remember in that house waking up to the news that my uncle had died and coming home to that house after my grandfather died.
We've had some ups and downs in that place, and it's a sacred place for me.
Peterβs Sacred Place
Now I think the Apostle Peter had a special place, and I think it was the Sea of Galilee. I can imagine him, even long after Jesus had ascended, coming back to the Sea of Galilee time and time again, sitting on the shores and feeling the breeze on his face, looking at the water and remembering Jesus calling himβa lowly fishermanβto follow Him. And he dropped his nets and ran through the water to say yes.
He'd remember Jesus calming the storm. They all thought they were going to die on that piece of water. Remembering Jesus walking on the water, calling him out of that boat and taking those few steps before he started to sinkβJesus reaching out and saving him.
I can imagine Peter remembering Jesus preaching on those shores. And then, of course, after He'd risen, in John 21, Jesus met the disciples there and they had a miraculous catch of fish. And then Jesus sat down and had a very significant conversation with Peter, which we'll talk about this week.
Finding God's Presence
I don't think he'd ever forget the Sea of Galilee! And I wonder, do you have a sacred place where you can sense God's presence in a particular way? God is not only in the church, of course, but maybe for you a church has held all sorts of memories.
Maybe it's time for you to take a moment and go back to a special place and just encounter God there. Or maybe it's time for you to create a new sacred place in your lifeβa new corner in your home where you go and you meet Jesus there every day, and that becomes your sacred little corner.
Create Your Sacred Space
Some of you might remember that movie War Room that came out a few years back. It was about how this lady turned her little closet into a prayer place, and that became a very sacred space in her life.
Do you have a sacred space in your life? Yes, every place is sacred because God is everywhere. But maybe, like Peter, you need a place that you can come back to and where you know: When I'm here, it's as if God is present. Go back to that place or create that place anew, and may God meet you in a special way thereβjust like He did with Peter.
