Doing Good
One thing that is clear in this book of Booker T Washington's is that he was committed to doing good. On page 49, he said: "I resolved to let no obstacle prevent me from putting forth the highest effort to accomplish the most good in the world." His great desire was to do good and his whole life was aimed at this. He wasn't out to make a success of himself per se. His plan was to go far in life so that he could do good in the world.
The Biblical Call to Do Good
In the Bible, we are constantly reminded to do good. In Acts 9:36, Luke talks about a disciple named Tabitha who was always doing good and helping the poor.
And Paul is quite clear about this in Romans 2:6 - 10. He says: "God will repay each person according to what they've done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory and honour and immortality, He will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honour and peace for everyone who does good, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile."
Don't Grow Weary in Doing Good
And so this is serious stuff, which is why Paul says in Galatians 6:9: "Let us not become weary in doing good," and in verse 10 "let us do good to all people."
Booker T Washington's great purpose in life was to do good. How about you?
