Guardian Angels
In Matthew 18:10, Jesus says, "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of My Father in heaven."
Angels Watching Over Us
Do you get this today, friends? Jesus is saying there are angels who minister to us. In fact, that's what Hebrews 1:14 says: "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" Can you picture right now angels from heaven ministering to the people of God on earth? That's an incredible thought.
What if you've ever encountered an Angel in some way? There was an occasion when we were busy packing our car full of band equipment on the way to a Sunday night service. We pulled the car out of the driveway into the street and a car came rushing down the road and stopped in front of us and a few men got out and we thought, here we go. They've come to take all of our stuff. But these men looked at us and it was like they froze in their tracks and they jumped back in the car and they rode off. And I wondered to myself if they saw something that we didn't see. Maybe they looked at us and they saw angels around us, protecting us.
Encounters With Angels
In fact, Derek Wilson, my mentor, who many of you have heard here on my devotions before, talks about a time when him and Yvonne ran out of petrol about a kilometer from a petrol station. And so Derek pushed the car while Yvonne steered, and suddenly a man came out of the darkness and started to help Derek push. And he said to him, "I know that you're a minister, and so I'm here to help." And so they pushed the car and got to the petrol station. And as they sort of stood up and as the car rolled to a stop, they looked around and the man had vanished completely. Now what was going on there? Surely this is one of the angels that Jesus was talking about in this verse.
Be Someone's Angel
And so I want to say to you today, friends, take comfort that there are spiritual beings who are looking out for us. It doesn't mean that we're never going to go through difficulties, but certainly there are times when angels of God come down and help us and minister to us, as Hebrews 1:14 says. But let me say this, I've also met a lot of angels who are real people - real people in the world who have helped and reached out and made a difference.
And I suppose that's our call as people of God, as Christians: to minister to each other like the angels minister to us. So thank God for your guardian angels and then go and be an Angel to somebody else today.
