As we saw yesterday, Paul told Titus to remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities and to be obedient. And then he adds at the end of that verse, to “be ready to do whatever is good.”

Ready to do good. And Paul actually says something like this another two times in the chapter: Verse 8, he says to Titus, “I want you to stress these things so that those who've trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.” And then verse 14 again: “Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good.”

Are you devoted to doing good? Ready to do good? Would people describe you that way?

A Life Remembered

You know, just a few weeks back, a dear friend of ours at eMseni died after a long battle with cancer. At the funeral, a few people shared about who he was and the sort of life he'd lived, and everyone agreed that he was a person who did good for the benefit of others.

And we heard about how this man had felt a call to ministry at one point in his life and went to speak to his minister about it. Ultimately, he realized that God hadn't called him to the pulpit, but God had called him to do good in other ways.

He was a very handy person, and so at eMseni there are traces of him everywhere because he fixed the doors and he fixed the gates and he installed the sound and he built the cupboards and he made the shelves and so on. He was devoted to doing good, and he was always ready to do good using the skills and abilities he had to help others. He will be remembered for that.

Devotion in Action

Let me ask you, are you devoted to doing good? What skills, what talents, what time has God-given you to devote to doing good?

I pray that, like my friend Des, one day when you and I are laid to rest, people will stand up and say he or she was devoted and always ready to do good.
