The Bridge Illustration
Another great way to share your faith is to use a picture of a bridge. I love this one and have often made use of it to share the gospel with others.
Understanding Our Separation
Start by drawing two cliffs with a gap between them. On one side, write "Us" or draw a little stick person. On the other side, write "God." Point to the gap and talk about how every person becomes separated from God by their sin. The Bible’s claim is that not one of us has remained free from sin, but each of us ends up with this great chasm between us and God because of sin – selfish and prideful thoughts and actions.
Then explain that most people try to bridge this gap by their own efforts. We try to get back to God by being good people, by doing church-things. We think that this will get us over the canyon but it doesn’t – all of these attempts are just like us running and jumping across the divide and flapping our arms to try make it to the other side. But the gap is too far. We need a bridge, and we are unable to build one.
Jesus: The Perfect Bridge
Then you’ll say that Jesus came to earth, and He died on the cross for our sins. What does that mean? It means he built a bridge. Now draw a cross bridging the gap between the two cliffs. "Jesus is the bridge," you can explain. “His death on the cross is what paved the way for us to come back to God.”
Share Jesus' own words: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). Jesus’ claim is that He is the only bridge that is strong enough to span the gap our sin created.
Then draw an arrow from the person, across the bridge and to God, and explain: "We can now cross over by putting our faith in Jesus - trusting Him as our Saviour and Lord, and not trusting our own efforts. Once we’ve crossed over, we’re back with God, and we can start living the life He has called us to live because He is with us again.”
The Power of Visual Learning
It’s a powerful illustration. Keep a pen handy - you never know when you might have the opportunity to draw someone a bridge back to God.
