Well, as this book begins, Michael Cassidy says this: “My testimony is of a weak vessel that the Lord decided to use in a very complicated context to make a difference in it through the power of the Spirit.”

Strength in Weakness

I thought that was a great statement to start your memoirs with. He didn't come in and say, “well, I did great things”. He began by saying, “my story is that of weakness and of God using me. Of my weakness”. That's a great way to see your life as a Christian.

In fact, later in the book, on page 157, Michael wrote this in his diary on the last day of 1960: “It was while I was pinned down by the darts of Satan, and while I was fighting for my very existence, that African Enterprise was raised up. As I was freed from Satan's clutches, the work, somehow already on its feet and moving, was thrust into my unsteady and faltering hands. Truly, His grace has been made perfect in my weakness. More than ever, I know that it is in spite of me rather than because of me that African Enterprise has come into existence. God forbid that I should ever boast of starting this work now.”

God's Grace Prevails

Those words just ring with such humility and grace, and that inspires me. It's easy for us to want to take credit for the things we've done, but in the end, what are we, friends? We're simply weak vessels, frail sinners to be used by God.

Will you go into your day knowing that whatever you're doing, it's in spite of you, not because of you, that God is going to make it happen? You and I have got nothing to boast about. If Michael Cassidy, with all the great things he did for God, could recognize that it was in spite of him, not because of him, that it happened, you and I should have the same attitude today.
