Weeping at Injustice

So how are you and I to be people who care about justice?

Firstly, we need to weep at the injustice we see around us.

Isn't it true that in our world the poor suffer and get poorer, and the rich prosper and get richer? People in need don’t get the help they require, evil people don’t get the justice they deserve.

In South Africa, it's catching up to us fast, isn't it?

Injustice Close to Home

We've seen Zuma just about ruin our country. We couldn't wait for him to get justice—to pay for the evil that he so mockingly committed in our country.

And then it happened. He got sentenced, and we thought justice at last. And then the country fell apart! Rioting broke out all over the place. Criminals jumped in and saw it as a chance to get more for themselves. Poor people, who have nothing and received no help from a government that promised it, saw a chance to get some loot and help feed their families.

So many levels of injustice, friends—if you look at our country in South Africa, and in many countries around the world—surely, surely you are weeping at the injustice.

A Cry from Scripture

But as it turns out, it's not only 2021 that this is a problem. Have a look at these words in Psalm 73 thousands of years ago in which the psalmist says:

“My feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits. They scoff and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. They say, ‘How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?’ This is what the wicked are like—always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.” (Psalm 73:2–13)

God Weeps for the World

Do you relate? Have you ever lamented the fact that the wicked get away with their evil while the poor suffer?

I hope you have lamented this fact, because if you haven’t, perhaps you’ve forgotten what the Christian faith is all about.

Because God weeps, friends—God weeps at the injustice of the world, and so should we.
