The Debtors
David was fleeing from Saul. He was up in a cave. And 1 Samuel 22 says that “the distressed and those in debt came and gathered around him.” Those in debt.
Now, Saul was not the greatest king and so being in debt probably put these people in danger. And so they fled to the cave with David where they would be safe.
In debt to God
Again, there's a spiritual aspect to this because all of us are in debt spiritually. In fact, Jesus talks about debt in Luke 7. There was a man who was judging a woman for worshiping Jesus in a very expressive way. And Jesus told a story to this man about two people who were in debt and one owed much more than the other. But the master forgave both of the debts. Jesus said that the one who had the greater debt forgiven would probably love the master more.
He was saying that this woman, though she was a sinner, knew how much she'd been forgiven, and so she worshiped with all her heart. But the Pharisee who thought that he hadn't much to be forgiven of, didn't even know he was in debt.
The Wages of Sin
We're all in debt, friends, we’re all in debt to God. God has given us blessings that we can't pay for. And in fact, we have tarnished his name so by our sin that we deserve punishment. “The wages of sin is death,” the Bible says. In other words, you earn death through sin.
But God came and forgave our debt. God came and wiped away the record of our sins. If you're in debt today, needing forgiveness, needing cleansing, needing to know the good news that you are loved, friends there's only one place to go. And it's into that cave with Jesus. It's into that place where he gathers around him, those who need him the most.
Debts Forgiven in Jesus
Run to him today. Throw yourself on him and say, “Lord, I know of my many sins and I'm in such debt. Would you wipe it clean?” And you know what? Jesus has paid the price. Jesus’ death on the cross paid the price and all our sins can be forgiven if we just place our faith in him.
Run to him today and have your debts forgiven so that you may live in freedom and peace in the presence of Jesus.
