Sent by Him
Well, this encounter with the risen Christ that these ladies had was powerful. They were seeking Him and He met them. They worshipped Him and fell at His feet. He calmed their fears. And then the last thing He does is He sends them out.
The Great Commission
Matthew 28:10, Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee. There they will see Me.” Go and tell.
Jesus made a lot of changes to how religion was understood when He came to earth. One of the big changes He made was transforming the "come see" Jewish faith into a "go tell" Christian faith.
Throughout the Old Testament, the whole message of God was "come see"—come to Jerusalem, come to the temple, come to the holy mountain of God and see His glory where He dwells.
God was set apart for the Jewish people. They were His chosen people and He said, “Come and see Me.” And so they made the temple the most spectacular building they could, so that when people came to see, they would be wowed by God. And everything about the Old Testament was come and look at this physical greatness.
From Temple to Testimony
Jesus came and He changed it all. No more temple, no specific city of God, no Jewish king or government to be aligned with, no ethnic superiority, no priestly sacrifices. Jesus is all of these things for us.
So when He rises, He tells them, "Go. I'm sending you to go tell the world about this good news.” And I think we've forgotten this. I think we're mostly still a "come see" people instead of being a "go tell" people.
Sharing the Good News
And this is massive. Instead of building lavish temples to glorify God, to entice people in, we need to be people who go out of our meeting places, out of our churches and go tell the good news of Jesus!
People are overawed not by physical wealth and spectacle so much anymore when it comes to spiritual things, but by spiritual wealth that is found in Christ. He satisfies, He is worthy, He sacrificed for us. We are free in Him. Doesn't matter who you are.
So go tell, friends, go tell of this Christ. You don't need people to be overawed by the spectacle of your church. You need them to hear and understand the worth of Christ. Our hope is no longer in God's presence being in the building. God's presence is in God's people who go out into the world and share the good news.
Go and tell, and the risen Christ goes with you.
