We’re All Treasure Seekers
When I was a child at Trinity Methodist here in Boksburg, our Sunday School was called “Treasure Seekers”. That’s a great name! Because in the end, we’re all treasure seekers. Every one of us is searching for pleasure and treasure in some or other way.
Note, Jesus didn’t say not to seek treasure. He just told us what real treasure is! Listen again to His words in Matthew 13: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”
Let me ask you: what’s your treasure? Your deepest desire? The thing you want most in life?
What are you seeking after, most fervently, in your life?
Revealing Deepest Desires
There’s a scene in the first Harry Potter book where Harry comes across a mirror in an old abandoned classroom. It turns out to be an enchanted mirror called Mirror of Erised (which is “desire” backwards). When you look in the mirror, you see your deepest desires (your greatest treasure!) Harry looks in the mirror of Erised and sees his family, his parents (who had died). His deepest desire is to be with them and see them smile. And his life matches that desire! As you read the books, you see that everything that Harry does is aimed at making his parents proud, it shapes his life in a profound way.
When his friend Ron Weasley looks in the mirror, he sees himself succeeding and being headboy and winning trophies, so that he can live up to family expectations. And again, as the story goes on his life matches that, he is forever living in a way that tries to achieve that goal.
You see, your priorities in life are always aligned to your greatest treasure. What you treasure most determines the choices you make and the way you live.
I want you take a moment, and imagine that you found this Mirror of Erised. Looking into it, you would see your deepest desire looking back at you… your greatest treasure fulfilled… your dream come true…
What do you see in the mirror?
Maybe that man who heard the Kruger millions crying out to him at night was not so crazy. Maybe you also have a deep desire for something that keeps you up at night.
Seeking God's Treasure
Here’s the question: do you see something of the kingdom of God in your mirror? Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a great treasure, worth selling everything for.
Go to God today and ask Him to give you treasure! To bring you into His kingdom where the treasures don’t get eaten up by moths and destroyed by time!
May it be that God touches your heart in such a profound way that your deepest desire – the thing you would see in the Mirror of Erised – is the smiling face of Jesus as He throws his arms around you in love.
