Here's another basic human need that was broken and distorted by human sin. It's the need for intimacy.

Created for Intimacy

Every person craves intimacy. We want to come out of hiding and show ourselves to other trusted individuals. We want to give ourselves away, to matter to somebody. To become one with another.

Seeking Intimacy in Bad Places

Many of us seek this intimacy in the wrong ways. We seek it in pornography or sleeping around. In fact, the great writer Max Lucado tells a story about a lady named Judy Bucknall who was strangled and stabbed in her apartment in the 80s. She'd lived a pretty immoral life, going through man after man but looking for real love. Her final thoughts in the diary that they found said this: “Where are the men who would like to share more than my bed, my booze and my food? I would like to have in my life once before I pass through my life the kind of relationship that is part of a loving relationship. Who is going to love Judy Bucknell?” she said.

Intimacy with God

Of course, the gospel for her was that God loved her, and that he didn't want her to stay in that mess, but he had good news that she could be free from this type of love and find intimacy with him, first of all, and then - in his will - with another.

What about you friends? Where are you searching for intimacy? Are you going from person to person, opening yourself up to them and never finding that closeness? Are you looking at things on a screen trying to force intimacy that will never come? Go to God first. Find the deepest intimacy with him, then trust him to lead you to the right place to find that with other people.

God has a plan for us to be intimate with him and holy and intimate with others. Don't search for it in the wrong ways. You'll find yourself like Judy Bucknell, longing for the intimacy that only he can give.
