This is Your Will

The second song on my new album is musically very much inspired by CityAlight, a group that I have come to really respect and enjoy. I was trying to sound like them in the music, but in the words my focus is God’s will, and asking Him to do His will in my life. Each verse focuses on a different aspect of His will, starting with verse 1 which goes like this:

His Will to Save Us

This is Your will, for me to be loved and saved
No longer trapped, condemned, no longer enslaved
Not by my goodness or works, no matter how hard I tried
Only by grace am I saved and justified

So God wants me to be saved and brought back into relationship with Him. It’s not by my goodness, or my works, that I qualify for His salvation. He saved me by giving Himself for me in my place on the cross, and if I accept His sacrifice by faith, I am no longer separated from Him, but welcomed into His arms. This is saving grace, and it’s His will for each of us. Has this been done in your life? It’s the first step in your life as a Christian, to accept His offer of saving grace and get into a relationship with Him.

His Will to Sanctify Us

But His will for you is more than that. It’s also to make you more like Jesus in your character. This is the focus of my second verse:

This is Your will, for me to be holy and pure
No longer living in sin, but enjoying its cure
Not by my goodness or works, so that no one may boast
Only by grace am I saved to the uttermost

That phrase saved to the uttermost is from Hebrews 7:25. New translations usually say “saved completely” or something similar – the point is that God’s gracious offer is not just to forgive your sins, but to free you from them. To make you holy and pure – and again, it’s not by our goodness or works that we are sanctified or made holy. God does it by His Spirit. It’s His will for us. It’s our responsibility to consecrate our lives to Him wholly, believing in His power at work within us, and resisting temptation when it comes. It is when we live by the Spirit in this way, that we are saved to the uttermost.

His Will to Glorify Us

And then comes the third verse, which says this:
This is your will, for me to reach heaven some day
No longer weary and stumb’ling along the way
Not by my goodness or works, will I march through that door
Only by grace am I glorified forevermore

It is God’s will that we have eternal life – life beyond the grave! One day, if we are believers in Christ, we will have this blessing. We will be fully delivered from this world’s pain and evil, and we will enjoy His presence in all its fullness. This is called our glorification.

So, God wills all three of these blessings for us: to save us from being separated from Him; to sanctify us that we may live holy lives, and one day to glorify us when we cross over to heaven.

Have you experienced His saving grace, and His sanctifying grace? Are you assured that you will meet Him and be glorified when you die?

Put your faith in Him today for all three of these. He is willing, so willing, to make them each a reality to you, if you will believe.
