Introducing People to God
Recently I read a lovely biography called Mrs Oswald Chambers - the story of Gertrude or "Biddy" Chambers, who married the writer of the world's most famous devotional book called My Utmost For His Highest. It's a classic work, and unbeknownst to me, it was actually published after Oswald Chambers died, when his wife Biddy compiled it from copious notes she had taken of his lectures and teachings over the years.
This biography of hers, written by Michelle Ule, was touching and inspiring. It gave a lot of insight into both her and her husband's lives.
Chambers' Single-Minded Purpose
The first time she encountered him was when he came to preach at their church. We read this on page 22: "Oswald Chambers relished opportunities to talk about Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and God Himself. Genial, with a playful sense of humour, and gifted with words, he talked quickly and with an intensity that captured his listener's attention. Oswald lectured without notes. His only goal: 'To have honourable mention in somebody's life in introducing them to God.'"
I think he achieved his goal! Many people have been introduced to God through the ministry and life of Oswald Chambers. This got me thinking - what's my only goal? If I had to state my life's mission in one sentence, what would it be?
What would it be for you? Would it have something to do with God?
The Christian's True Goal
If you consider that Jesus' parting words to His disciples were that they go into the world and make other disciples by teaching them to obey Jesus' words, then perhaps Chambers had it right. Perhaps the goal of any Christian should be to introduce somebody else to God in some or other way.
Have you introduced someone to God of late? Does your life lead people to the Lord? Do your words point people to Him?
Will you reach the end of your life having reached that goal?
Learn a lesson from Oswald Chambers today. His only goal was one that all Christians should certainly strive for.
