Obeying When It’s Hard
Wally Herron’s first wife died tragically on the mission field, and for a few years he carried on his work alone. Then one day a lady named Emily arrived at their mission station, and to cut a long story short, the two of them were later married.
But Emily had not really wanted to be moved to the place where Wally was. She had been shipped around from place to place by the missionary organisation she was working for, and eventually she settled in a place called Vallegrande, learning Spanish and assisting local missionary doctors. She was just getting used to it when the news came that she was to be moved again. Emily was distraught at this – and protested the move quite passionately. But the decision had been made, and so with sadness she began to pack her things again.
Obedience Brings Unexpected Blessings
Years later, Emily would look back and see that God’s promise in Romans 8:28 was true. The verse says “All things work together for the good of them that love God.” She had thought that moving was the last thing she couldn’t wanted, but it turned out that waiting for her there was her future husband and a great work of God for her to be involved with.
You see the lesson here don’t you? It’s easy for us to think that we know what it best. Especially when we start getting comfortable in a place or a role, we find ourselves reluctant to move or change. But God has a way of sending us in unexpected directions, and here’s the thing: we need to be obedient to go where He calls, because the greatest blessings always await where He calls.
Emily could’ve protested her move with more gusto – she couldn’t written to the director of the mission organisation, and demanded to stay, etc. But once her emotional response had cooled, she decided to obey the call and go where she was sent, and to trust God in doing so. And it paid off!
Embracing God's Call for Blessings
Perhaps there is an area of your life where you don’t really want to answer God’s call. You want to just stay where you are because it’s comfortable. God’s calling you to commit to a church, but Sundays are just too comfy when you take them slow. God’s calling you to get involved in a group or ministry, but you are already busy and you just don’t want to shake things up.
What if the greatest blessing of your life is waiting at the end of God’s call?
Learn from Emily Herron today, who trusted that God would work all things out for her good, if she would obey and go where God sent her.
