Come Lord

This week I'd like to teach you some oxygen prayers, as I call them. These are short prayers, short bursts that you can pray throughout your day. Sometimes you just need some oxygen to fill your soul, something to give you a bit of a boost. And these oxygen prayers are for you to just grasp onto, pray them, and lean on God and get some strength as you go. So I hope that they'll be useful to you.

And the first one is: Come, Lord. Such a simple prayer. But I find myself often throughout the day just saying, “Come, Lord. Come.”

Waiting for Jesus

Now in the Bible, we tend to see this phrase used in two different ways. In the New Testament, the Christians were waiting for Jesus to come back. Jesus, of course, had told them to be ready for His return, and so they were waiting. After all, the Bible closes with the words of Jesus saying, "Yes, I’m coming soon." And then the writer, Revelation 22:20, says, "Amen. Come, Lord Jesus."

So when we say, “Come, Lord,” for one thing we're saying, "Jesus, come back. Come quickly. We're looking forward to Your coming and the final healing of the world that will come with it.”

God's Immediate Presence

But in a more immediate way, when we pray, “Come, Lord,” we're asking God to come into our immediate situations. Now that’s not to say God was far away until I called on Him. No, He was always close. And so perhaps when I'm saying, “Come, Lord,” I’m actually praying, “Lord, let me be more aware of the fact that You are close.”

Countless times in my life, this has been a prayer that’s been powerful. It’s helped me to recognize God’s closeness. It’s helped me to know that I’m not alone. It’s helped me to just know that I can walk through the waters and the flames because He is with me.

So how about using this one today, throughout the day? All you need to say is, “Come, Lord. Come, Lord,” and believe with all your heart that He is near. And I know that His presence will seem nearer and will give you new strength as you go on.
