Choose Your Rock and Fortress

The Choice is Yours! Psalm 31 - Choose Your Fortress

Well, there are many things in life that are out of our control, but the way we respond to these things is certainly a choice of our own. This week, I want to look at Psalm 31, where we see David making a few choices about how he's going to deal with difficult times. As I read verses 2 and 3 now, see if you can hear which words get repeated.

God as Our Refuge

David says, “Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.” Then verse 3: “Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.”

I'm sure you heard them there. In verse 2, he said, "Be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me." And in verse 3, he said, "Since you are my rock and my fortress, lead and guide me."

Choosing God as Our Fortress

David decided to call God his rock and fortress. At first, he was pleading for God to be that, and it's almost as if he then realized, "Hang on, you are my rock and my fortress." He reminded himself that God was these things in his life.

These are two great images of who God can be in our lives if we choose to let Him. Is God your rock today? A solid rock on which you stand, firm and strong even if everything else crumbles? And is God your fortress today? A fortress is a safe place where people would hide from their enemies.

Choose today, friends, to stand on the rock. Choose today to flee to the fortress who is God. You see, we can do life without actually calling on God to be these things for us. We can refuse to stand on His solid ground, and we can walk straight past the strong tower, the fortress that He is. But we can also choose to put our faith in Him and find Him to be these things in our lives.

I pray that today you and I will choose God as our rock and our fortress.
