Resolved to Not Waste a Moment
We're getting some inspiration from Jonathan Edwards’ resolutions. Even though we're a couple hundred years later, they're still really great ones to follow.
Using Time Wisely
I want to look at #5 and #6 today because they work together in my mind. “Resolved, never to lose one moment of time, but improve it the most profitable way I possibly can”. And then number six is: “Resolved, to live with all my might while I do live”.
To me, those two go together because he's saying, I want to make the most of every minute. I want to throw my all into life. It's kind of a carpe diem attitude - seize the moment, make the most of every moment.
Glorifying God Daily
But remember what we spoke about yesterday, about how everything we do is to glorify God. For Edwards, making the most of every moment meant glorifying God every moment. And so for him, work was to glorify God. Home was to glorify God. Family was glorifying God. Enjoyments in life were all to God's glory. And I hope that you and I can live the same—to never lose a moment, but to live with all our might while we do live.
Making Life Count
And again, this reminds me of Paul. I've shared this verse from Ephesians 5:15–16 before, where Paul said: “Be very careful how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.”
Truly, we only live once, and so instead of living it recklessly, we live with great wisdom, making the most of our days while we still have them.
Maybe that'll be one of your resolutions this year. Let me live with all my might and not lose a moment.
Because, as Derek Wilson says, the saddest words in the English language are the words “if only.” Don't let those be the words on your lips at the end of this year, but live it with all your might.
