Scripture Testifies About Jesus
In John 5:39 Jesus said that the Scriptures testify about Him. Let’s read from v37: “The Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,” he says to these unbelieving Jewish men, “nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very scriptures that testify about me.”
Missing Jesus in the Scriptures
Think about it, they were scouring the Scriptures and yet missing the one who embodied them! They were scouring the Scriptures and missing the Scriptures’ testimony about Jesus. And the Old Testament testifies about Jesus left, right and centre. Everywhere you go in the Old Testament, you see pictures of Jesus. And yet Jesus said, ‘These men who scoured the Scriptures had never heard God's voice or seen his form, and his word did not dwell in them because they didn't believe.’ They didn't believe in Jesus. And so they missed it all.
You see, you can read the Bible all day, every day. But if you don't come from a place of faith in Christ, you're not going to hear his voice from the words. You're not going to see his form. His word is not going to dwell in you, and it's going to come to nothing. The Scriptures testify about Jesus. And if you're not searching the Scriptures to find Jesus, you are going to find nothing.
Reading the Bible like Pharisees
The first time I started studying theology, the college that I was at was very godless, and it was a theological degree, but it was Spirit-less. It was all about seeing the Scriptures as historical documents and not as the living Word of God. I changed over to a different college after a year, and it was the best thing I could do because I stopped scouring the scriptures like the Pharisees and missing Jesus and began to scour the Scriptures looking for Him and be filled by the Spirit. And it brought me to life.
