The Night is Dark But I Am Not Forsaken

The Night is Dark But I Am Not Forsaken

And so, as I mentioned yesterday, this song is written in pairs - verse-chorus, verse-chorus, and so on. And so the second verse begins like this: "The night is dark, but I am not forsaken, for by my side the Saviour, He will stay. I labour on in weakness and rejoicing for in my need His power is displayed."

Light in Dark Times

This next little group of verse and chorus talks about difficult times and how through Christ in us we can get through. The verse said "the night is dark, but I am not forsaken." Now I've only been doing ministry here at the Church of the Nazarene for a couple of weeks, but you know what? As I've gotten to know the people, the night is dark for a lot of them. There is a lot of struggle, a lot of hurt, a lot of difficulty going around. And I know that's true everywhere, in every church congregation, in every Christian fellowship around the world. Many people are going through dark nights of the soul.

But as the song says, "I am not forsaken” even in my dark night, “for by my side the Saviour He will stay." Do you need to hold on to this today, that even when the night is dark, you are not forsaken? The Saviour stays with you. Just think of that. When it gets dark, Jesus doesn't go away. He stays with you in the dark.

His Power in Our Weakness

And then the song says, "I labour on in weakness and rejoicing." So even when we're in dark times, when we're feeling weak, we go on, we step on, and we even find joy in the midst of the darkness. Because as that last line says, "in my need His power is displayed." In other words, when we're in our darkness and in our weakness, that's when Christ displays His power in us.

Paul was clear about this when he wrote: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV). So be encouraged today, friends. If your night is dark, if you're laboring in weakness, your Saviour has not forsaken you. And if you hold to Him, His power will be displayed in the difficult times you're going through.
