His Spirit Like Water to Our Souls
Let's carry on looking at the words from this little bridge section of John Barnett's song.
Your name is like honey on my lips
Your Spirit like water to my soul.
A Thirst for God
That's Psalm 63:1, which says, “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek You; I thirst for You, my whole being longs for You, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.”
For me, this verse has always reminded me that if I'm drinking too deeply from the things of the world, I've probably gone spiritually thirsty. Very much like what we were talking about yesterday with the honey.
Broken Cisterns vs Living Water
The world is a dry and parched place with no lasting water. In fact, Jeremiah the prophet put it so well. Jeremiah 2:13, capturing the words of God, who said, “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
I think that's a pretty accurate description of life. We have a way of forsaking the spring of living water, which is God, and digging our own little worlds that can't actually hold anything of value.
Let me ask you, is God's Spirit like water to your soul? Well, it will be if you quench your thirst on Him. Jesus said that He is the living water.
Friends, don't commit the sins that the prophet was complaining about here. Let's not forsake the spring of living water — Jesus, as we've been singing this whole week — but let's find our satisfaction and let's quench our thirst in Him, because only He can really fill our souls with the joy and the peace and the love that we are seeking and that we need.
Peter made a mistake when Judas betrayed Jesus. He reacted without listening to Jesus’ guidance. DO we do the same?
In the last hours of Jesus’ life, the people around him made some awful mistakes. Let’s not fall into the same traps.
The Bible gives us two accounts of Judas's death that may seem contradictory at first glance, but a closer look reveals they tell complementary parts of the same tragic story. When you encounter difficult passages in Scripture, take time to read carefully and trust that God's Word is reliable and true.
Manasseh and his people heard God speak but paid no attention, ignoring the Word of the Lord. Let’s not make the same mistake!
Christians worship God as revealed through Scripture, not the Bible itself. The Bible is valuable because it points us to the One who is most valuable of all - God Himself.
Jesus' words amazed those who heard Him, filling them with wonder at His teaching and power. Do His words still fill you with wonder today, or have they become merely familiar?
Jesus' words carried authority that amazed those who heard Him teach in Capernaum. Are you still learning from His teaching today, and more importantly, are you putting it into practice?
A classic evangelism technique is the Romans Road. Learn this one and use it often!
Did Paul distort the gospel of Jesus into something that Jesus himself would not approve of? Some people think so. I don’t!
In contrast to the sinful ways that people often use their mouths and words, God's Word is flawless! David in Psalm 12 reminds us of the Bible's great place in our lives.
As a friend of mine says, "if God says it, believe it, it's done!" The family of Jesus laughed at Jesus' words, but then they found it He had been telling the truth. Stake your life on the words of Jesus - it's the best way to live.
How privileged we are to have our own Bibles in these times. Yet, how often the sun goes down with our Bibles still unopened or unread. Let's change that! The Word of God brings truth... even when it doesn't bring peace.
Even in cricket, faith can shine. Through Marnus Labuschagne’s example, we’re reminded to carry God’s Word daily—on shoes, bats, or hearts—so it dwells richly in all we do.
When God’s Word was taken from him, Andrew Brunson clung to Scripture hidden in his heart. Let his story remind us to treasure, memorize, and meditate on God’s Word daily.
Stephen's accusers covered their ears and yelled to drown out the truth - a warning against the noise and distraction that can keep us from hearing God's voice today.
