The Well That Never Runs Dry
Let’s listen to the chorus now:
All I want to do is dwell in Your presence
and drink from the well that never runs dry.
All I wanna see is the light of Your glory,
And just one glimpse, and just one drink,
And my soul is satisfied.
There are two images here which we'll look at over the next two days.
The first one is that of water. The songwriter says: "All I want to do is dwell in Your presence and drink from the well that never runs dry."
The Living Water
This comes from John 4:14, where Jesus said: "Whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
Jesus was talking about how faith in Him is like a well of water that never runs dry. It doesn't mean that we don't go through difficult times, but it means that our hearts will forever be filled and satisfied.
A Spiritual Parallel
As the song says: "My soul is satisfied with just one drink." Now it's getting quite hot again here in Gauteng, and one thing that I always struggle to do is drink enough water. I'll have my coffee in the morning and then maybe another cup of coffee, and then often I reach the end of the day and realise I haven't had water - just tea or coffee - and man, that's not a good thing!
So when I start drinking a lot of water, I feel refreshed, I feel strengthened. It's really an amazing thing - just drinking water.
Forsaking the Living Water
I realise how this is parallel in our spiritual lives, because much of the time we've got this living water available to us - the spiritual nourishment and fulfilment that Christ offers - but we just don't drink of it.
We go and drink at other places, very much like the prophet Jeremiah said in Jeremiah 2:13 about God's people committing two sins: "They have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."
That's a vivid picture of how we often deny God. He's given us living water, and yet we forsake the living water He gives and go fill our cisterns with all sorts of other stuff.
So listen to that chorus again, friends, and ask yourself - am I going to drink from the well that never runs dry, where just one drink satisfies me? Or am I going to try to fill myself with other things?
Be wise. Come to Jesus. Come to the Holy of Holies by His grace and enjoy that great nourishment that He gives you.
I pray that today, when you spend time with Him, it will be spiritually fulfilling for you - and that you'll be satisfied with that drink that He offers you.
