God is Righteous and Just

So we spoke yesterday about how God reigns. He is the King. He is greater than we can ever imagine.

Psalm 97:2 says: “Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” In other words, He’s mysterious. He is utterly unapproachable in His holiness.

And the verse says “righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. That’s an interesting verse.

Righteousness and Justice

When you think of God, what do you think is the foundation of what He’s all about? Many people would say love, and that’s certainly central to who God is.

But have you ever considered that the throne of God is built on righteousness and justice?

Righteousness is God’s holiness, His purity, His utter goodness. In other words, God is without sin. And justice essentially has two parts. Firstly, God’s punishing of evil, bringing justice to those who have caused damage in this world. But then justice is also about fairness, and all people receiving God’s blessings and benefits.

What Is the Foundation of Your Life?

Now these two terms are used together a lot in the Bible because they teach us also how we should live. We should be dedicated to righteousness and holiness, seeking to live lives of goodness and purity as a way to honour the God who created us. But we must also love lives of justice, seeking to put right the wrongs in this world, to set the oppressed free, and to help those in need.

If the foundation of God’s throne is righteousness and justice, let me ask you, what’s the foundation of your life as a follower of God? Do you also stand strongly for righteousness in your life, and stand up for justice?

Let these two words echo in your mind today, and let everything you do shine as an example of godly righteousness and shine as an example of godly justice.

I think if all Christians today went and did that, amazing things could happen in the world.
