Jesus the Main Character
We're a culture that loves stories!
I remember as a kid at preschool, a man we knew as Grandpa Stories used to come and read to us. We loved it!
I always loved to read. But the books I read aren't really reflective of my own story! I often read cowboy books, but I'm definitely no cowboy! I love a good murder mystery, but there's been none of that type of mystery solving in my story.
I enjoy a good movie or TV show, but in the end it's escapism - something so removed from my reality, that it becomes fun just to dive into that world for a bit.
The Christmas Story Still Being Written
But what's wonderful about the Christmas story is that it isn't removed from my and your reality! In fact God isn't done telling the Christmas story yet!
Because: He still needs Marys to bring Jesus into the world today, and He still needs Josephs to set an example of faithfulness, and He still brings good news to shepherds and other ordinary people, and calls them to share it with the world, and He still has redemption available even for Herods – the villains!
But most importantly, today, He still wants to bring Jesus into your story and mine. Because in the end, a Christmas story without Christ is not Christmas at all. And in the end, a human being's story, void of Christ, has missed the plot completely.
One of the great pictures of Jesus comes from Revelation 3 where Jesus says "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock". Maybe today He stands at the pages of our lives and says "let me start writing! Let me take my place on the pages of your story!"
In fact one of my favourite carols says "cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today." He wants to enter into your story! To be born into your life today.
Making Jesus the Star
But what I've noticed is that for many of us, we write Jesus into our stories as a side character. We still want to shine off of the pages! We still want to be the main characters!
And so we bring Jesus into the story here and there... Sundays maybe sometimes... Holidays maybe... Prayers here and there maybe...
And He never gets the chance to make the impact on the story that He can!
I want to invite us today to allow Jesus into our own stories, our own lives. But I want to remind us that if He is to come into our stories, He must come in, in a central role.
Only when Christ is the main character, the star of your story, does your story begin to take shape in the best way.
God isn't done telling the Christmas story yet - He still wants to bring Jesus into your own story. Is Christ is truly the main character of your life or just a side character?
