The Only Way that I Survived
The year is just about over! And I want to close out this year's devotions using the lyrics of a song I wrote at the end of last year. It begins like this:
Another year has come and gone
I can't believe it's through
The only way that I survived
was holding onto You
There were laughs and there were tears
there were smiles and frowns
In the end Lord, You alone
helped me through the ups and downs
I was trying to sound like a Disney-style ballad, which I'm sure you can hear - sentimental and a bit soppy even. But the words, the words are the important thing!
Treasuring the Highs and Lows
Maybe you can relate to the laughs and tears, and the ups and downs, I was talking about there. Nobody amongst us had a perfect year, I know. For all of us there were good and bad moments. Looking back, I am grateful for both - the good moments were treasures to keep, and the bad moments were growing opportunities.
The only way I survived was holding onto God! Because through it all, He remained constant.
What did you hold onto this year? Money? Possessions? Relationships? Knowledge? Success? These things are not bad in themselves, but there's not much grip on them! You try hold onto them, and they just slip through your fingers!
God's Sustaining Hand
But holding onto God is different. I like how Jesus says "My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of My hand." (John 10:27-28) And the Psalms say this: "You make Your saving help my shield, and Your right hand sustains me; Your help has made me great." (Psalm 18:35) Wonderful! As we held onto God this year, He held to us, and His hand sustained us through it all.
Take a moment to look back on the ups and downs of the year, would you? Praise Him for the ups, thank Him for the help through the downs. And marvel at the fact that as you hung onto Him, He held onto you.
Peter had the right foundation in Christ, but his faith didn't stop him from repeatedly getting it wrong. Take heart today if you feel like you keep failing - there is always hope and forgiveness in Jesus.
Peter's fumbling start in the Gospels was not the end of his story - his simple faith in Jesus as Messiah laid the foundation for an extraordinary, Spirit-filled life. Ask God today whether you have built your life on that same foundation.
Peter heard the women's news and ran to the tomb - eager, inquisitive, and reflective. Follow his example today by running to meet the risen Christ with an open and wondering heart.
The women came looking for a dead man and found an empty tomb - they were seeking in the right place. Ask yourself today whether you are looking for life in Jesus, or in things that will never truly satisfy.
Two criminals hung beside Jesus on the cross, but only one received salvation - the one who repented and trusted in Him. On this Good Friday, consider where your trust truly lies.
Pilate saw the truth about Jesus but rejected Him anyway to please the crowd - a mistake many of us still make today. Consider whether you are compromising what you know to be true about Christ.
A stubborn refusal to examine the evidence for Jesus is as dangerous today as it was for the Sanhedrin. Ask yourself today: have you genuinely considered the claims of Christ with an open heart?
Jesus stands on trial today just as He did 2000 years ago - and each of us must reach a verdict on His claims. Consider today: how will you judge Him?
An extra devotion to thank you for your support! Let me share a story that reminds me of Peter’s staying away from Jesus in fear of condemnation. I hope it will inspire you to go back to Jesus, if you need to, today.
Jesus promised to strengthen Peter's faith after his denial – and He will do the same for you. Will you return to Jesus and find strengthening too?
On the night that Peter denied Jesus, Satan was at work in his life. Satan comes for us too – will we be sober and fight the fight?
Judas’ betrayal began when he started flirting with the idea Be careful of flirting with sin. It does not end well!
Judas betrayed Jesus – but I’m sure it was a slow descent into that decision. Be careful – don’t get complacent in your faith!
Biddy Chambers’ great faith enables her to never question of get upset at what God was doing. What an example for us.
Peter's repeated failures didn't disqualify him from Jesus' love or mission - his foundation of faith proved stronger than all his flaws. Come back to Jesus today, no matter how far you've strayed.
