Beware Meaningless Talk
Wherever there is Christianity, there is false Christianity alongside it.
It was happening in the days of the early church. In 1 Timothy, Paul writes to a young pastor to say beware of the false teachers. Combat them, in fact, so that the truth of the gospel is what people hear and experience. Be faithful to the gospel and not to the cultural twisting of the gospel, he says to Timothy.
He begins his letter by saying this:
"As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God's work - which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm." (1 Timothy 1:3-7)
What Does the Bible Say About Meaningless Talk?
Paul says that instead of love, a pure heart, a good conscience and sincere faith, false teachers are all concerned with meaningless talk. Talk about myths and endless genealogies and controversial speculations instead of advancing God's work.
They don't know what they're talking about, Paul says.
Phineas Bresee, the founding father of the Church of the Nazarene, said this: "A great noise will hinder us from hearing distinctly. So much talk will hinder us from hearing the gentle, sweet voice of the Holy Spirit. When a man leaves his safe open, it is a sign that there is not much value in it; so when we have not a gate of prudence before our lips, is it not an evidence that there is not much depth of spiritual life there?"
Guarding Your Ears From Empty Words
I spend much of my life talking. Many of you hear me every day on my daily devotions. Every week I preach at church and upload all sorts on my YouTube channel. I pray earnestly that I don't get caught up in meaningless talk when I do all this. But I pray that my words are always edifying, and encouraging, and equipping - focused on love, a pure heart, a good conscience and sincere faith.
Think for a second about the words and the talk that comes into your ears. TV shows, radio, podcasts, YouTube channels, TikTok videos, Instagram reels, Facebook shorts, or wherever else you get content. How much of it is meaningless talk? Godless talk that doesn't advance God's work by faith?
Beware, Paul says to Timothy, those whose words are meaningless. Perhaps it's time to silence some of the voices that speak meaningless things into your life.
Ask yourself, whatever or whoever you are listening to: is this advancing God's work, or not?
