Take My Life
Listen to that first verse again:
Lord I come (Lord I come)
Take my life (Take my life)
I offer it to You, a living sacrifice
We spoke about coming to God to spend time with Him yesterday, but this next part of the verse seems to be pretty obviously based on Romans 12:1, where Paul said: "I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your true and proper worship."
True Worship
Now this is important, because when we sing worship songs, we can sing the words, but unless we're offering our bodies - our lives - as living sacrifices to God, then we're not truly worshipping. We're just paying lip service and taking the appearance of a worshipper, because true and proper worship is honouring God with our lives.
So when we sing the song, "Lord I come," we need to remember to go on to say, "Take my life. I offer it to You, a living sacrifice." That's what the Christian life is all about.
Living the Sacrifice
So let me ask you - have you offered yourself to God? Offered Him your life? Offered Him your body to be used in a holy and pleasing way?
What does this mean? It means living a life not conformed to the pattern of the world. That's what Paul goes on to say - but transformed with a new mind. Christians live lives of radical love, radical compassion, radical commitment, and great holiness.
Worship With Your Life
It is in doing these things that we truly worship. So sing these words again today: "Lord, I come. Take my life. I offer it to You, a living sacrifice."
And be sure that you're not just worshipping God with your lips, but that you're truly giving yourself to Him - to be used in your world today in a way that will please Him.
