Phoebe Palmer - A Woman of Holiness
We've spent the week talking about ordinary women in the book of Acts who led extraordinary lives of service, hospitality, and leadership. Let me wrap up this week by telling you about a special lady in our own holiness tradition. Her name was Phoebe Palmer.
A Life Surrendered to Holiness
In the mid-1800s she began to sense God's call to holiness - to live a truly holy and consecrated life. She committed her all to God, and her life was transformed.
She became a Lydia by opening her home and starting a weekly gathering for the women in the area - and before long, men were coming too to hear her teach about holiness.
She became a Priscilla too - teaching with authority and grace about God's call to holiness. She published a very popular newspaper called Guide to Holiness and also published various books on the subject - using her abilities to serve like Dorcas.
The holiness movement began to flourish. Before long, whole denominations were forming, inspired by her service, her hospitality, her leadership.
The Legacy of Faithful Women
The Church of the Nazarene, my own tribe, is one such denomination.
Thank God that we didn't shush Phoebe Palmer! Thank God that we allowed her to serve, to create spaces for God's work, and to lead and teach.
I wouldn't be where I am now if we hadn't let this ordinary woman live that extraordinary life.
Allow me to say a big thank you to all the Dorcases who serve in God's kingdom, all the Lydias who create spaces in God's kingdom, and all the Priscillas who lead and teach in God's kingdom, and all the Phoebe Palmers who serve God with such passion.
But may we all – male or female – be people of service, hospitality, and leadership in God’s Kingdom.
When staunch Jew Stan Telchin discovered that his daughter had become a believer in Jesus, he began ferociously studying the Bible to prove her wrong. Shouldn’t believers have this sort of passion for God’s Word?
Wally Herron’s last sermon helped his family and friends cope with his untimely death. His message “God knows” reminds us, even today, that we can trust God even through tragedy.
The words of an unbelieving friend could have made Wally Herron give up on his calling. But instead, they inspired him to greater things! Don’t let taunts from the godless bring you down, let them inspire you.
When God seems slow in changing difficult situations, it is likely that He is at work preparing something wonderful. This is what Wally and Emily Herron found out in Bolivia, when a situation became very dangerous.
Wally Herron’s wife, Emily, learned that when we are obedient to God’s call, he “works out all things for good” (Romans 8:28).
In a moment of great difficulty, Wally Herron was able to see how God had helped him. He praised God even though he was tired and weary. Let’s do the same.
Wally Herron wanted to be a missionary, but he was told it was not for him. He wanted to a pilot, but he was told he’d never pass the test. A few years later, he was the greatest missionary pilot the world had seen.
Wally Herron was a missionary pilot known as the Condor of the Jungle. Early in his life he learned what real faith is – not sitting waiting for God to move, but acting and believing that God will help you.
Henry Garlock's father had a dramatic conversion after his mother did something drastic. What powerful work might God be wanting to do in your life, if you would wrestle until He does it?
Andrew Brunson’s story reminds us to boldly embrace our identity in Christ. Even in persecution, he was unashamed of the Cross—challenging us to stand firm, unashamed, and faithful to Jesus.
Even in prison, Andrew Brunson chose to worship and dance before God. Let his joy remind us to praise through pain—singing, dancing, and declaring God’s goodness no matter our circumstances.
When life feels unfair or God seems silent, choose to declare faith like Andrew Brunson: “I will follow You, Jesus.” In surrender and love, find strength, victory, and unshakable hope.
When life feels dark and hopeless, whisper, “Jesus, help me.” Like Andrew Brunson in prison, hold on in faith—trusting God’s strength to sustain you and help you remain faithful.
Phoebe Palmer's life of service, hospitality, and teaching helped birth the holiness movement - proof that one ordinary woman's faithfulness to God's call can change history. Give thanks today for those who went before you, and ask God how He is calling you to do the same.
