Choose to Commit to God
We're talking this week about the many choices we face in life, and we've spoken about choosing God as our rock and refuge and choosing to avoid the traps the enemy sets for us.
Then in verse 5 of Psalm 31, we find a beautiful prayer, and you'll probably recognize it from the New Testament. David writes, "Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God." Jesus said the first part of that verse while He was on the cross, in a loud voice, according to Luke's gospel. Even at the end of His life, He was still committing it to God.
Committing Your Spirit to God
Once again, let's note that this is a choice. David and Jesus both prayed this: "Into your hands I commit my spirit, Lord." It's a choice to commit our life, our spirit, our heart to God.
I also like how, after the first part, David says, "Deliver me, Lord." In other words, once we commit our lives to God, it's His power and work that brings deliverance.
Choosing to Commit Fully
In life, there is a dual responsibility: we need to take the initiative to commit ourselves to God, and then it is God who works through us when we are committed to Him. Do you need to choose today to commit yourself to God? No one is going to do it for you. No one can make you do it. It’s entirely up to you. But once you take that step, God will give you all the strength you need to do it.
If you look up the word "commit" on Google, the definition given is "to pledge or bind a person or organization to a certain course or policy." Have you pledged or bound yourself to the ways of God? That’s what it means to commit—it means to promise your loyalty to God.
This is truly the Christian ethic, friends. In 1 Peter 4:19, Peter wrote, "Those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good." That’s what David did, and it’s what we too should do.
Choose today to commit to Him, and you won’t regret it.
