Commit Your Ways to Him

Let’s look at the last phrase in Psalm 37:3-5, it says “Commit your way to the LORD.” (Psalm 37:5 NIV11).

Many of us remember the popular worship song of the 2000s that went:
One way, Jesus, You’re the only One that I could live for!

I remember there were t-shirts with a one-way sign, and the word Jesus on it, that became popular in those days.

Full Commitment

One way! Commit your way to Jesus, and make sure you are moving and living in His way and not any other.

It takes courage to commit to something fully. It’s much easier to sort-of commit, and to only do the easy part and bail out when it gets tough.

You know the story, of course, of the chicken and pig walking down the road, when they passed a restaurant with a sign that read: "Ham and Eggs - Fresh Daily!" The chicken, feeling proud, said to the pig, "Look at that! We're both contributing to people's breakfast. Isn't it wonderful how we're both involved in helping feed people?" The pig looked at the sign, then at the chicken, and replied, "Well, for you it's involvement, but for me it's total commitment."

Total commitment is what Jesus required too. Remember, when he told the people that to become his disciple they had to deny themselves and take up their cross? There’s no half-measure there. That’s a full commitment.

Lazy Christianity

One of the big diets that has become popular over the last few years is the ketogenic diet – it’s a great diet for losing quick weight with its low-carbohydrate, high-fat approach. But then some people do what is called “dirty keto” or “lazy keto”. This is where you don’t quite follow the keto thing all the way, but you include some other highly processed foods so that it’s not quite as difficult.

I think many of us have the tendency to do “dirty Christianity” or “lazy Christianity”, where we commit most of our ways to the Lord but still bring in some worldly things, that dilute the purity of our faith.

In fact this reminds me of Jesus’ words to the church in Laodicea, in Revelation 3:15-16. He said “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16 NIV11)

Is it time for you to commit your way to the Lord? One way Jesus, you’re the only one that I could live for. I pray that we as followers of Christ will truly commit to Him today.
