God Hears Our Cries

Let's go back to the Psalms this week and look at Psalm 86 - a great Psalm with some wonderful words, and I encourage you to read the whole thing by yourself. I'm just going to pick out some thoughts here and there, but read the whole Psalm. It's a great prayer of David - and as it starts, he seems to be in a pretty bad way.

Crying Out to God

“Hear me, Lord, and answer me. I am poor and needy. Guard my life, save your servant. Have mercy on me, O God.” He's really crying out to God and letting his feelings be known.

But I love what he says in verses 6 and 7: “Hear my prayer, Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. When I am in distress, I call to You because You answer me.”

Now this is a good lesson for us to learn. When you're in distress, don't just moan to nobody in particular or to the people around you, but cry out to God. Call on God to hear all your prayers.

David said all those prayers: help me, have mercy on me, guard me save me, etc etc. What cries are coming from your heart at the moment? Are you bringing them to God? Are you calling out to God? Or have you given up on that? I hope that you haven't! I hope that you persevere in your prayer and bring all these sorts of emotions that you have to your Saviour.

God Answers

This is why we spend time with God. It's not just because it's a religious ritual, but it's because when we bring them to Him, we find peace. And as verse 7 says, He answers us. He answers us in His Word, He answers us in worship songs, He answers us through godly people.

And so, don't keep your cries to yourself, friends. Bring them to God like David did. And in your time with God, He will answer you in His way if you’ll listen.
