Gratitude in Times of Anxiety
On we go through Derek Wilson's sermon on gratitude, and his words today are very profound indeed, listen closely:
Learning Gratitude in Hard Times
Secondly, I want to say that we will learn our greatest lessons about gratitude in times of anxiety and frustration. Think about this family that I spoke about a few minutes ago. This lady at the wedding yesterday - man, was she happy! Because her husband had been healed. But you know what? They had to live through all the anxiety of their cancer before they discovered that it was gone. Without the anxiety, they wouldn't really understand what gratitude is about.
Do you get what I'm trying to say here? Because it's very important. We will learn our greatest lessons about gratitude in anxiety and struggle.
Nothing changes other than the fact that we understand how fragile life is. When you understand how fragile life is, you say, "Thank you, Lord" - you really do, for every day. This life that we have is an amazing gift. But it's a matter of perspective. You've got to get your perspectives right on life.
A Matter of Perspective
It's like the story of this young girl who went to varsity, staying in res, and she writes a letter home and she says, "Folks, I just want to say to you, I'm okay. After all those student riots and the fire that we had in our dormitory, I had to go to hospital because I had lung damage, and I spent a little while in hospital. But I'm okay now. I met an orderly at the hospital, and we've fallen in love, and I've dropped out of university, and we've got married, and we're living in Alaska, and I'm pregnant."
Then she wrote a line at the bottom and she said, "I'm only joking, but I failed my chemistry test, and I wanted you to keep your perspective."
You see, it's a matter of perspective, folks. We learn our greatest lessons on gratitude in the midst of anxiety.
Do you need to change your perspective today, and get grateful even in your anxiety? May it be that your heart finds its way to being thankful, whatever it is you're going through today.
Changing moods and emotions are a normal part of being human, and holiness doesn't make you immune to them. Fix your eyes on Jesus through your ups and downs, and be patient with yourself and others.
Our bodies change with age, but God's love for us never wavers regardless of our outward appearance. Embrace the changes time brings, and remember that God places His emphasis on inward beauty, not outward.
Change is the one constant in life, and every one of us must learn to deal with it. Ask God today to give you the grace to face whatever change may be coming your way.
The best way to deal with disappointment is not to dwell on it, but to flood your mind with God instead - and discover the perfect peace that only He can give. Fix your mind on Him today rather than on what has hurt you.
Every disappointment this side of eternity is temporary - and fixing your eyes on the eternal glory ahead is the key to walking through the pain. Lift your eyes above your circumstances today and place your hope in Him.
Could it be that your disappointment turns out to be the best thing that happened to you?
God can use even our disappointments for good. But we must be willing to deal with them!
Disappointment is inevitable, even for people of faith - but God offers not a way out of it, but a way through it.
Our deepest lessons in gratitude are often learned in seasons of anxiety and struggle - because it is there that we truly understand how fragile and precious life is.
Peter had the right foundation in Christ, but his faith didn't stop him from repeatedly getting it wrong. Take heart today if you feel like you keep failing - there is always hope and forgiveness in Jesus.
The women at the empty tomb refused to stay paralysed by grief - they got up, and that changed everything. Whatever has knocked you down lately, take a step of faith today and get moving.
Jesus’ disciples neglected prayer in their exhaustion and sorrow. How often we make the same mistake.
Sometimes our greatest growth comes not from easy victories but from the tests where we barely scrape through. Embrace today's struggle as an opportunity for character development, trusting that God uses even your hardest tests to shape you.
Shallow faith that never takes deep root will fail when tests come, but a faith built on daily commitment to God will climb higher through life's difficulties. Go deeper in your faith today and commit to your God, come what may.
God is not finished - He is actively at work in His people right now, even through difficulty and struggle. Celebrate His present work in your heart today, not just what He did in the past.
