Grateful for Pain
A third “P” that I’m grateful for as 2023 draws to a close is a hard one. It’s the pain that this year brought.
I don’t know your story of course, as you listen to me today, but I can tell you that our family went through some painful moments this year. We experienced a few devastating losses. We had our hopes dashed more than once. We walked some painful roads and cried some bitter tears.
2023 was not a wonderful year for us, and we are finding ourselves hoping for something better in 2024.
Grateful Through Pain: God's Transformative Work
But in spite of this, I remain grateful. Because when I read God’s Word, I see how He always finds a way to use pain for the good of His people.
Many times in these daily messages of mine I have shared these classic words of James 1:2 - “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
James is saying even if you’re in pain, God is working! He’s maturing you and developing perseverance in you so that you can be who you are created to be.
The truth is, we can’t really get anywhere without pain. No pain, no gain, right? If everything was easy, we would never grow and mature. And so I look back on 2023 and see the painful moments and seasons and I think – God is good. He was with us in those times, and He was busy growing us through them.
Not that I felt so grateful at the time. At the time I was sad and angry. But looking back, I see how God used these moments to bring about good.
Transforming Pain: Gratitude in Trials
What pain do you need to be thankful for today? I know it’s a big ask. I know it’s impossible to be grateful for pain, unless God is at the centre of your thoughts. Are you able today to go to God in faith and say “these painful moments, I release them to you, and ask you to make something beautiful out of them”?
Think of it, Jesus endured the pain of the cross… so that people might be saved through Him.
Paul and the disciples endured the pain of beatings, shipwrecks, jailtime and more… so that more people could know of Jesus.
Maybe your pain could be a pointer to Jesus, if you endure it with grace and display a deep faith in spite of it.
Maybe 2023’s pain might be a blessing to you and to others, if you see it this way.
Shallow faith that never takes deep root will fail when tests come, but a faith built on daily commitment to God will climb higher through life's difficulties. Go deeper in your faith today and commit to your God, come what may.
Recovery taught me the power of celebrating small wins rather than sinking into self-pity. Today, identify one small victory you can pursue and celebrate it when you reach it.
Psalm 37 tells us to trust God. What’s the difference between trust and hope?
Even after great victories, faithful people can experience emotional slumps and discouragement without losing their standing with God. Allow yourself to be human today rather than maintaining a superficial spiritual facade.
God works through flawed human beings rather than perfect angels, and He doesn't expect us to lose our humanness through salvation. Embrace today that you're called to be a holy human, not a flawless angel.
It’s easy to be negative. Choose instead to be positive and not see yourself as a victim.
Kim Phuc's journey through chronic pain reveals how God provides daily remedies and uses our suffering for greater purposes. Let her story inspire you to seek God's presence even more earnestly than relief from your struggles.
Through constant physical pain, Kim Phuc discovered that contentment comes from choosing God in every moment and saturating herself in Scripture. Today, ask God to teach you the secret of finding peace despite your circumstances.
Kim Phuc's journey from being a bombing victim to finding Christ reveals how God can use even the darkest circumstances for His purposes. Let God's sovereign plan encourage you today as you face your own trials.
Psalm 9 shows how God gives victory over enemies, and while our battle today is spiritual rather than physical, we can trust in His power to help us overcome. Face 2025 with confidence, knowing that true victory comes through maintaining unwavering faith in God despite life's challenges.
Psalm 9 reveals God's promise to be our stronghold during times of trouble, offering protection and comfort to those who trust in Him. As you enter 2025, choose to make God your refuge and experience His faithful protection through whatever challenges may come.
As another year draws to a close, God invites us to pause and reflect on our journey with Him. Have you taken time to see His faithfulness through both the joys and trials of 2024?
The apostle Paul was a fighter right to the end. Stand up and fight today – with the Spirit in you, you have more power than you know.
The difficulties of the Karoo made me forget, for a little while, why I even signed up in the first place. How can you push through your struggles and reclaim your joy today?
Struggling up the Karoo hills, I reminded myself to take "small steps, big breaths”. This can help us in our walk with God too, when we find ourselves facing the steepest mountains.
When facing disappointments, remember Uncle Bud Robinson's wisdom: turn your "disappointment" into "His appointment," trusting that God has a purpose for every challenge you encounter. How can you view your current struggles as opportunities for God’s plan to unfold in your life?
Paul warns Timothy of the misguided notion that the Christian faith takes away all your struggle. In fact, difficulties abound for the real Christian – but they are very much worth the trouble.
As Christians we don’t pretend that life isn’t challenging. We acknowledge it, but we also acknowledge that God holds us through the storms.
Paul uses three pictures to show us how to endure the difficulties of the Christian life. Which resonates with you – soldier, athlete, or farmer?
Paul knew that putting God in the centre might result in suffering. But when it happened, he kept God in the centre and refused to let his troubles overwhelm.
God longed for his people to be close to Him, but they refused to come near to Him. Yet, His outstretched hand remained, even as they went into exile.
Zephaniah pronounces woe on Jerusalem for not trusting in God. We may say we believe, but do we trust?
What keeps us ‘two worlds apart’ from God? Sometimes a heartache, or sometimes a sin or mistake makes us avoid Him. These very things should make us run to Him instead.
The disciples were promised power through the Spirit, and what a great measure of power they received! Are you operating in the Spirit’s power today?
Sometimes it seems like God is out of earshot, or not paying attention to us. But Psalm 145 gives us the assurance that God is near when we call.
When we end our prayers with the word “amen”, we are declaring our trust in God. He is a God who keeps His promises, as Psalm 145 points out.
Jesus’ startling presence turned the disciples from panicked to peaceful. He can do the same for you and I today.
Frances Havergal went through some dark moments, but God comforted her through them and she was able to comfort others as a result. This is what all our suffering is about – passing on the same comfort God gives us with others.
Frances Ridley Havergal was one of the great hymnwriters of her day. Some words from her biography inspire us this week – starting with her Father’s quiet rejoicing in God even in his illness.
Sometimes our greatest growth comes not from easy victories but from the tests where we barely scrape through. Embrace today's struggle as an opportunity for character development, trusting that God uses even your hardest tests to shape you.
