The Blessings of Memory
Luke: Well, I’m back here with Trevor Duffy to do another chapter from Frank Mussell’s great book, A More Excellent Way.
Trevor: Yeah, Luke, thanks again. We’re looking at chapter 24 today. This has meant a lot to me over the years - “The Blessings of Memory”.
I remember my dear late mom used to say, ‘Thank goodness for memory.’”
Remembering God’s Faithfulness in Difficult Times
Frank Mussell speaks about Moses in Deuteronomy 8:2, where Moses is speaking to the people of Israel as they were struggling. He says to them, “Remember.” There’s that theme of memory again.
He said that because he knew there were going to be hard times ahead, the call was for courage, and what he wanted was for the people to bring back past experiences—to remember how the Lord had helped them and what He had done for them.
This remembering would spur them on to greater encouragement, enabling them to press on and keep going, even though the times were difficult. God had never forgotten them.
Living with Faith, Hope, and Remembrance
And it makes me think about our lives as well. It’s so important sometimes to look back and remember the times when the Lord has helped us—when we’ve prayed and seen those prayers answered, when He has been there for us.
Remembering those moments should inspire and encourage us for the future, reminding us that God will be there for us again.
Yeah, and it makes me think of Jesus’ words at the Last Supper, where He said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” He wanted us to live with this awareness—constantly looking back at what God has done and how He has blessed us.
So, are you remembering? Are you looking back?
He ends with these three lines:
“Let us then, in memory of what God has done in the past, realise what He can do for us in the future and go forward with faith and hope, nothing doubting.”
Circumstances shift constantly while God remains unchanging, but the greatest truth is that this lost and lonely sheep has been found.
God remains faithful even when we stray, pursuing us with grace and pulling us through every storm and clear sky alike.
As another year closes, reflect on how holding onto God sustained you through every high and low, and give thanks that His hand never let you go.
Our faith can be a powerful way for us to set an example in this world. Do people see a deep trust in God when they look at you?
