Christ, Lord, Saviour, Holy One

On we go with my Christmas song Born in Bethlehem and the chorus goes like this:

He is Christ, He is Lord, He is Saviour of all
He’s the Holy One, born in Bethlehem
All of heaven starts to sing ‘Glory, glory, to the King!”
Praise the Holy One, born in Bethlehem

Understanding His Divine Titles

I always enjoy singing that chorus because it puts Jesus in the centre of my thinking. I stop thinking so much about my own things, and just marvel at who He is!

First, the song says, He is Christ. Remember, Christ was not Jesus' surname. It was His title. “Christ” meant anointed one, or Messiah. In calling Him the Christ, we are stating that we believe in Him as the promised Messiah, the One God had spoken about all throughout Old Testament times, who would come to restore God's kingdom.

Then we sing He is Lord. That's a precious title of His, for me. I usually use this title when I pray, because it really resonates with me – Jesus being my Lord. For me this means that He has authority in my life. It is His glory I am living for, not my own.

The Fullness of His Nature

Third I sing that He is Saviour of all. Of course, not everybody is saved. Some people who we call universalists believe that all people ultimately are saved, but I don't – I believe it is God's desire that all be saved, and that Christ's death is sufficient to save all people, but because He has given us the gift of free will, many people reject Him and ultimately end up in eternity without Him – which is hell. I am glad to know Him as my own Saviour, and to have the assurance from Him that I will one day be in His presence.

And then the fourth title I use here is Holy One. He's the Holy One, born in Bethlehem. This is a similar title to "Christ", it means the same thing really. He is the chosen and anointed one of God – holy in His nature because He is one with the Father.

And so yes, let's join in with all of heaven and praise this Jesus who is all these things! Again I want to remind us that He didn't stay as a meek and mild baby. He took His place as Christ, Lord, Saviour, the Holy One.

This Christmas, worship Him. Give Him glory. Bow before Him, because this baby that was born was God in the flesh, worthy of our praise in every way.
